ShiroKuro, a visual novel developed by Asobu Akinashi, is making its way to Steam with Shiravune publishing the new release. The project previously launched through Japanese domestic distribution in December 2024 and is now being prepared for a broader audience with official English and Chinese text support.

The story follows Tohru Minagawa, an ordinary student whose relationship with his girlfriend Shiro has lasted for roughly a year. That stability is disrupted when Kuro, his childhood friend and former crush, re-enters his life after the two had drifted apart following a rejected confession.

Shiravune Is Bringing ShiroKuro to Steam

The biggest development is ShiroKuro's move to Steam, with Shiravune handling publication.

The original Japanese release became available domestically in December 2024. The new listing gives Asobu Akinashi's project a clearer path toward readers outside Japan who previously faced language and regional distribution barriers.

Yu Akinashi has also announced that the international-version wishlist page is now open and indicated that the Steam page will be updated once a release schedule is finalized.

For now, Steam still displays “To be announced.”

No launch date, release month, price, introductory discount, or preorder program has been published.

The storefront opening therefore marks the beginning of the international rollout rather than a confirmed launch date.

Tohru Is Caught Between His Girlfriend and His Childhood Friend

The protagonist is Tohru Minagawa, an ordinary student with somewhat nerdy interests.

Around a year before the story begins, he started dating Shiro, with their shared interests helping bring them together.

That routine changes when Kuro Chono, Tohru's neighbor and childhood friend, begins speaking to him again after years of distance.

Their history is important.

Tohru once confessed his feelings to Kuro, only to be rejected. The two subsequently drifted apart despite having been extremely close when they were younger.

Kuro's return therefore does not introduce a completely new relationship. It reopens a bond that already carries unresolved history, placing it against Tohru's established relationship with Shiro.

Steam frames the central question around whether Tohru's loyalty to his current girlfriend will hold.

Shiro Represents the Relationship Tohru Already Has

Shiro is Tohru's girlfriend and attends the same school year as him.

Her official profile presents her as cheerful, kind, and broadly well-liked. She began dating Tohru during the previous school year after the two connected over their shared nerdy interests.

One of her defining hobbies is cosplay creation.

Rather than simply wearing costumes, Shiro makes high-quality outfits herself, combining technical skill with affection for the original works she is recreating.

That makes her role in ShiroKuro distinct from a newly introduced romantic candidate. The story begins with Shiro and Tohru already in a relationship, so the dramatic tension concerns something that already exists and can potentially be destabilized.

There is currently one small naming inconsistency across official pages. Steam romanizes her name as Shiro Nagisaku, while Shiravune's English product page uses Shiro Nagisaki. The Japanese name 凪咲白 itself is consistent, so this article refers to her simply as Shiro when the surname is unnecessary.

Kuro Returns After Years of Distance

Kuro Chono lives next door to Tohru and is his childhood friend.

She is one year younger, and the two were once extremely close.

Their relationship changed after Tohru confessed his feelings and Kuro rejected him, eventually leaving them distant from one another.

In the present, Kuro lives a much more isolated life.

Steam describes her as staying home and missing her classes after experiencing a difficult event and developing a psychological condition.

Despite that situation, she is characterized as a diligent student who enjoys studying and genuinely wants to return to school.

This gives her return additional emotional weight. Kuro is not simply competing with Shiro over Tohru's attention; she brings years of shared history and unresolved feelings into a relationship that Tohru has already built with someone else.

Steam Calls It a Short, Single-Ending Visual Novel

The storefront gives a useful indication of the game's intended scale.

Steam explicitly describes ShiroKuro as a short single-ending visual novel.

That positioning suggests a more concentrated narrative rather than a large multi-route structure built around numerous separate heroine endings.

The game also features full Japanese voice acting.

Shiro is voiced by Shino Amekawa, while Mirai Soyokaze voices Kuro.

The current language metadata is worth noting because it differs from one part of the initial coverage. Steam lists English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese for interface and subtitles, while Japanese is checked only under full audio.

Shiravune's official product page currently matches that arrangement: the three localized languages appear under TEXT LANGUAGES, while Japanese is listed under FULL VOICE.

AUTOMATON reported Japanese text support as well, but with both active primary product pages currently showing otherwise, the Steam and publisher listings are the safer reference until they are updated.

Yu Akinashi Brings an Independent Circle to a Wider Audience

ShiroKuro is developed through Asobu Akinashi, the doujin circle centered around Yu Akinashi's creative work.

The name Yu Akinashi / 春夏冬ゆう will already be familiar to parts of the Japanese visual-novel audience.

AUTOMATON highlights Akinashi's involvement with titles including Love, Election and Chocolate and Meteor World Actor, as well as illustration work on the Rakuen Noise light-novel series.

ShiroKuro puts Akinashi in a more direct creator-led position. Steam specifically credits character art & design by Yu Akinashi, while Asobu Akinashi itself is listed as the developer.

Shiravune's involvement also means the doujin project is receiving an official localization route rather than relying on unofficial translations for English- and Chinese-speaking audiences.

No console or mobile versions have been announced at this stage.

PC Requirements Are Listed, but the Launch Details Are Not

Although the release date remains unknown, preliminary PC requirements are already available.

The minimum configuration calls for 64-bit Windows 11, 4 GB RAM, 512 MB of graphics memory, 3 GB of available storage, and DirectSound support.

The recommended configuration lists an Intel Core i Series processor, 8 GB RAM, 1 GB VRAM, DirectX 11, and 4 GB of storage.

Steam Cloud and Family Sharing are also enabled on the listing.

There is currently no verified Steam Deck compatibility result, achievement list, soundtrack page, controller requirement, or regional price.

Indonesian is likewise absent from the supported-language table, meaning Indonesian players will need to use one of the currently listed text localizations unless additional languages are announced later.

Why This Matters

1) A Yu Akinashi doujin project is receiving an official localization

ShiroKuro began as a Japanese domestic release. Shiravune is now bringing it to Steam with official English and two Chinese text options.

2) The triangle is built from two fundamentally different relationships

Shiro is Tohru's established girlfriend, while Kuro represents a childhood bond complicated by an old rejection. That creates a different setup from a story where both heroines enter the protagonist's life simultaneously.

3) Steam establishes the narrative scale upfront

Calling ShiroKuro a short single-ending visual novel gives potential players a clearer sense of its scope before release.

4) The release connects Akinashi's established art career with a creator-led project

Yu Akinashi is already associated with recognizable visual-novel and light-novel work. ShiroKuro now gives a project developed under Asobu Akinashi an official international distribution channel.
