The Full Game Does Not Require VR
The 4,980-yen Desktop Edition is the primary version of Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns and can be played entirely through a regular PC monitor.
Its main features, including the Zero-Distance Strip Mahjong presentation, are available without purchasing VR hardware or the VR DLC.
The 1,980-yen DLC adds a dedicated SteamVR mode with stereoscopic viewing and a closer sense of scale. Players can also preserve preferred viewpoints as photographs.
The DLC requires the base game. A 5,916-yen bundle packages both products together at a 15-percent discount compared with purchasing their normal prices separately.
Two-Week Launch Sale Cuts All Prices by 20 Percent
ILLUMINATION will discount every edition by 20 percent from launch until September 10 at 12:00 p.m. JST.
The Japanese prices become:
- Desktop Edition: 4,980 yen → 3,984 yen
- VR Mode DLC: 1,980 yen → 1,584 yen
- VR Mode Bundle: 5,916 yen → 4,732 yen
Steam uses regional pricing outside Japan, so local currencies may differ.
The store categorizes the game as Adult Only. The developer separately states that all characters appearing in the title are adults.
Four Heroines Return in Full 3D
Venus Returns brings four familiar Super Real Mahjong characters into full 3D:
- Mizuki Tohno — voiced by Ichika Tachibana
- Aya Fujiwara — voiced by Chihiro Ishiguro
- Akira Hayasaka — voiced by Yuri Yamaoka
- Showko — voiced by Rena Maeda
Showko now manages the P's CLUB mahjong cafe, which serves as the central location for matches with the heroines.
Merry Haruhina created the new character designs, while the game uses Japanese voice acting throughout its character interactions.
An Auto Mode is also included for players unfamiliar with mahjong rules, allowing the game to handle play automatically when desired.
Memories Stores 62 Scenes
A successful 2025 crowdfunding campaign raised approximately 33.8 million yen from 1,129 supporters, far beyond its initial two-million-yen target.
Several stretch goals subsequently expanded the finished game. Venus Returns contains 35 episode scenes centered on conversations and story interactions.
Its Memories feature collects episodes and reward scenes, allowing players to revisit 62 scenes after unlocking them.
A free-camera system is available during matches and selected scenes, giving players control over their viewing position.
Around 130 Collectibles Preserve Series History
Venus Returns also includes a large collection of material drawn from the history of Super Real Mahjong.
Approximately 130 collectible items can be unlocked by meeting specific conditions or spending points earned through matches.
These include all 38 P's CLUB membership cards and seven instruction cards from previous entries, alongside other archived memorabilia that has become difficult to obtain physically.
The collection gives the new game an archival element in addition to its 3D reconstruction of classic characters.
Steam Deck and Five Languages Are Supported
ILLUMINATION has tested monitor-mode play on Steam Deck and lists it as supported.
For VR, confirmed test hardware includes Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, PICO 4, and PICO 4 Ultra when connected to a compatible PC.
The interface and subtitles support Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean. Voice acting remains Japanese-only.
Why This Matters
1) VR is genuinely optional
Players can finish the complete game with a standard monitor rather than treating the Desktop Edition as a reduced version.
2) Familiar characters have been rebuilt rather than simply reused
Mizuki, Aya, Akira, and Showko return through new 3D models and newly recorded voice performances.
3) Crowdfunding significantly expanded the project
The campaign enabled additional voiced conversations, expanded Memories functionality, and further ending content beyond the original plan.
4) The game preserves material from the franchise's past
Historic P's CLUB and instruction cards are represented as digital collectibles instead of being left outside the new release.
