A 40-Year-Old Detective Meets a Silent High School Girl

Eiji Kirisame is a 40-year-old detective at Nanakorobi Police Station whose life is largely devoted to criminal investigations.

During one case, he encounters Tsugumi Kuchinashi, an 18-year-old high school student who witnessed the incident but does not speak.

Tsugumi communicates through a sketchbook. Her drawings may be difficult to decipher, but her observation and deduction skills repeatedly reveal details that Eiji might otherwise miss.

A Marriage Proposal Changes Their Partnership

Their connection does not remain a simple detective-and-witness relationship.

After helping Eiji piece together the case, one page in Tsugumi's sketchbook carries a completely unexpected message: a marriage proposal.

From there, the series develops its mystery and romantic-comedy sides in parallel, using their age difference, contrasting personalities, and unusual communication style as part of the central dynamic.

Inori Minase Plays a Heroine Without Conventional Dialogue

Inori Minase faces an unusual performance challenge because Tsugumi explicitly does not speak.

Minase says she conveys the character through breathing and reactions that accompany Tsugumi's physical efforts to communicate with her pen and sketchbook.

Tomoaki Maeno, meanwhile, describes Eiji as a serious character whose sharp reactions and tendency to be overwhelmed by Tsugumi create much of his comedic appeal.

EMT Squared Handles Animation Production

Takaaki Ishiyama directs the anime, with Shigeru Murakoshi handling series composition.

Miyuki Nakamura is responsible for character design, Hiroto Morishita serves as sound director, and Kana Hashiguchi composes the music.

EMT Squared handles animation production, with the new teaser offering the first proper look at Eiji and Tsugumi interacting with their anime voices.

The Manga Has Reached Seven Volumes

Shinichi Sawaragi and Tank Gasuyama's manga remains serialized in Hakusensha's Young Animal.

The series has surpassed 400,000 copies in circulation and currently has seven collected volumes, with Volume 7 released on April 28, 2026.

International readers also have an official English edition from Yen Press under the title A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage.

Why This Matters

1) Visual communication becomes part of the mystery

Tsugumi does not deliver clues through normal dialogue. Eiji has to interpret her writing and sketches, which can become puzzles of their own.

2) Inori Minase is performing a character without conventional lines

Tsugumi's characterization depends more heavily on breathing, physical acting, expressions, and writing rhythm than a normal spoken performance.

3) Mystery and romance grow from the same unusual partnership

Criminal cases give Eiji and Tsugumi a reason to work together, while the sudden proposal pushes their relationship into romantic comedy at the same time.
