Midnight Toybox has been officially revealed as Rabidbit Games' turn-based horror board game, with a free demo already available on Steam. The full version is currently targeting an early December 2026 release.

Teaser, Steam, and Gameplay

Every Piece Looks the Same
The central mechanic is built around uncertainty. Infantry and bomb soldiers share the same outward appearance, so players do not know what they are capturing until the decision has already been made.
Reading the opponent therefore matters as much as board position. A seemingly valuable target may be safe infantry—or bait designed to make the player pick up a bomb.
Three Different Ways to Win
Midnight Toybox offers three distinct victory conditions: capture three points of enemy infantry, trick the opponent into capturing three points of your bombs, or send infantry all the way to the skull square in enemy territory.
That means a move can serve several purposes. Aggression may be genuine, while a deliberately exposed piece can become part of a larger bluff.
Strategy Cards Can Reverse the Match
Strategy cards introduce additional tactical effects beyond standard piece movement. They can enable unusual moves, steal an opponent's card, or make a captured piece count as two.
These effects create comeback opportunities while making it harder to determine an opponent's actual plan from the board alone.
Free Demo Available During Steam Next Fest
The Midnight Toybox demo is already playable ahead of the full release and is participating in Steam Next Fest: October 2026 Edition.
The complete game is planned for early December. Pricing and a specific launch day remain unannounced, so Steam currently lists it as Coming Soon.
Why This Matters
1) The horror is directly tied to the board-game rules
Losing is not only a narrative failure; it is connected to the deadly collar fitted to the player character.
2) Piece information is deliberately hidden
Players have to rely on behavior, positioning and bluffing rather than open information.
3) Three victory routes encourage deception
Winning can mean taking enemy pieces, feeding bombs to the opponent or infiltrating their territory.
