One Day in July 1999

She Doesn't Know does not attempt to cover months or years of school life. Its story is restricted to a single day in July 1999, during a period the Steam page describes as an idle moratorium before the two girls move further into adulthood.

Everything is experienced through Haruka. Rather than sending the characters on a large-scale adventure, the game concentrates on how an ordinary day and a long conversation can expose things they have kept between themselves.

Haruka and Shiho Are Already a Couple

Their relationship does not begin with a first meeting or a gradual pursuit of romance.

Haruka and Shiho are already childhood friends and lovers when the story opens. That allows the visual novel to focus less on reaching a confession and more on what an established relationship means when both girls are thinking about family, school, and an uncertain future.

Casual Conversation Moves Into Heavier Territory

The two discuss everyday subjects such as their part-time jobs, school grades, and what they might do after graduation.

Their conversation also reaches Shiho's family situation, the meaning of happiness, their feelings toward one another, dreams that may never come true, and thoughts about death.

Steam additionally warns of mild bullying, violence, and suicide, meaning the story is not entirely light despite its deliberately ordinary one-day setup.

1-Bit Pixel Art Remains Part of lvl374's Identity

Haruka and Shiho's day is depicted through distinctive 1-bit pixel art, using a deliberately restrained visual presentation.

lvl374 previously used a similar 1-bit approach in halfmoon, a short visual novel and point-and-click adventure released on May 21, 2026. Before that, the developer created NIDANA, a text-free first-person dream simulator published by PLAYISM in July 2025.

She Doesn't Know continues lvl374's interest in minimalist presentation, this time through a conversation-focused visual novel built around two characters.

The Translation Is Still Being Refined

Steam currently lists Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, but the developer includes an important note about the localization.

The translated text currently visible is machine-translated while refinement continues. lvl374 says a finalized translation will be released in time for Steam Next Fest.

Valve's Steam Next Fest: October 2026 runs from October 19 through October 26. The final release date for She Doesn't Know itself remains unannounced.

Why This Matters

1) The relationship is already established

Haruka and Shiho are not characters working toward becoming a couple. Beginning with an existing relationship lets the story focus on how that bond intersects with family problems and uncertainty about adulthood.

2) A single day carries the entire story

The timeframe is deliberately narrow, yet the girls' conversation moves from ordinary school matters to much more personal questions.

3) lvl374 continues its minimalist design approach

After NIDANA and halfmoon, the developer is again limiting its visual language to build atmosphere—this time through a 1-bit story about two girls in late-1990s Japan.

Closing
