Official Notice and Vermeil in Gold Manga

Umezu Died on July 7
Monthly Shonen Gangan stated that Umezu died on July 7 following a cerebral infarction.
The editorial department expressed its respect and gratitude for her work while offering condolences to her family and readers.
Her funeral had already been held privately among relatives and close family members before the announcement was made public on August 12.
The statement did not disclose Umezu’s age or date of birth. Figures circulating without an official source should therefore not be treated as confirmed.
The July Issue Chapter Becomes the Manga’s Final Installment
The announcement also establishes the future of Vermeil in Gold.
Monthly Shonen Gangan confirmed that the chapter published in its July 2026 issue, released on June 12, will serve as the manga’s final chapter.
No further manga installments are currently planned. The decision follows Umezu’s death rather than a previously announced conclusion to the story.
Square Enix has not stated that another artist will take over the series.
It also remains unclear whether the published final chapter resolves every narrative thread involving Alto, Vermeil, and the ongoing conflict.
Uncollected Material Still Awaits Publication Plans
The most recent collected edition is Volume 11, released by Square Enix on June 11, 2026.
Because additional magazine material exists beyond the chapters collected in that book, Volume 11 should not automatically be considered the final collected volume.
The editorial department says information concerning the publication of currently uncollected material will be announced once plans have been decided.
A Volume 12 or separately designated final volume has not yet been announced.
Details such as its chapter lineup, additional material, release date, and final format therefore remain unknown.
Eight Years of Alto and Vermeil
Vermeil in Gold began serialization in Monthly Shonen Gangan in August 2018, with Kouta Amana writing the story and Yoko Umezu providing the artwork.
The story follows Alto Goldfield, a struggling student at a magical academy who risks repeating a year because he cannot summon a familiar.
After activating a magic circle found in an old grimoire, he accidentally summons Vermeil, an immensely powerful demon who had been sealed inside the book.
The two form a contract and begin facing magical battles, academy conflicts, and mysteries surrounding Vermeil’s origins and abilities.
Umezu remained responsible for the manga’s artwork from the beginning of serialization through its final published installment.
The Manga Inspired a 2022 TV Anime
Vermeil in Gold received a television anime adaptation that premiered on July 5, 2022.
Staple Entertainment produced the series, with Takashi Naoya directing and Tatsuya Takahashi handling series composition.
Yuuya Hirose voiced Alto, Maaya Uchida played Vermeil, and Wakana Kuramochi voiced Lilia.
The series ran for 12 episodes and concluded in September 2022.
Umezu also contributed newly drawn artwork to anime-related products, extending her visual work on the series beyond the manga itself.
Why This Matters
1) The series has lost the artist who defined its visual identity
Umezu drew Alto, Vermeil, Lilia, and the wider magical world throughout almost the entire eight-year serialization.
2) No continuation by another artist has been announced
The already published chapter is being treated as the final installment rather than the beginning of a transition to a new creative team.
3) Some material remains uncollected
Volume 11 is the latest available tankobon, but Square Enix still needs to decide how the remaining magazine chapters will be published.
4) Umezu’s work reached an international audience
Vermeil in Gold later became available digitally outside Japan and received an internationally distributed television anime adaptation.
